What Is Marathi?

Marathi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Marathi people in the Indian state of Maharashtra, the second-most populous state in India, with a total of 83 million speakers. The two major dialects of Marathi are Standard Marathi and Varhardi dialect.

Where Is Marathi Spoken?

Marathi is spoken in the Indian state of Maharashtra, the second-most populous state in India.

 

The state is divided into 6 divisions and 36 districts. The state capital is Mumbai, one of the most popular and well-known cities in all of India.

 

Marathi has the third largest number of native speakers, behind Hindi and Bengali, in India and ranks 11th worldwide with the most native speakers!

What’s The Difference Between Marathi And Hindi?

Despite both Marathi and Hindi using the Devanagri script (देवनागरी), there are major differences between the 2 languages when it comes to:

 

  • Grammar
  • Pronunciation
  • Verb forms
  • Addition of prefixes and suffixes

 

However, since Marathi and Hindi use the same script, anybody who can read Hindi can automatically read Marathi. So, if you’re already familiar with Hindi, this could be a great opportunity to learn a new language easily!

Is Marathi Hard To Learn?

If you’re already familiar with Hindi, or other Indian languages, then Marathi shouldn’t be too difficult for you. If not, it might take you a bit longer to pick up the language. However, Ling believes it’s possible for anyone to learn any language!
