Numbers are divided into two main categories: cardinal and ordinal numbers. Of course, this applies to Albanian numbers too. These two types of numbers are used for different purposes, which is what we’ll discuss in this article.

The best thing about Albanian numbers is that you don’t have to worry about the script, as they use the same Arabic numerals as English. The main difference lies in their pronunciation.

So, let’s master Albanian numbers together!

What Are Albanian Numbers?

Albanian numbers are used to count things, talk about age and dates, tell time, denote position, and show quantity. As we’ve mentioned above, these numbers are further divided into two types:

  • Cardinal numbers (numrat kardinalë)
  • Ordinal numbers (numrat rendorë)

Let’s look at them one by one with examples:

1. What Are Albanian Cardinal Numbers?

Albanian cardinal numbers are used to show quantity. They basically answer the question ‘how many’; that’s why they are also known as counting numbers.

Below are some examples of Albanian cardinal numbers:

How To Form Albanian Numbers

Now that we’ve understood cardinal and ordinal Albanian numbers, let’s look at some Albanian number rules for forming tens, compound numbers, hundreds, and ten thousands.

Recap: Albanian Numbers From 1 To 10

Before exploring the rules, don’t forget to first revise the numbers from 1 to 10, as they form the base for bigger numbers.

NumberEnglishAlbanianSound
0zerozero zero
1onenjë një
2twody dy
3threetre tre
4fourkatër katër
5fivepesë pesë
6sixgjashtë gjashtë
7sevenshtatë shtatë
8eighttetë tetë
9ninenëntë nëntë
10tendhjetë dhjetë

Now, let’s start forming numbers!

How To Form Albanian Numbers From Ten To Nineteen

From eleven to nineteen, we form numbers by following a simple addition rule:

number + mbë + dhjetë

Let’s understand this with an example:

Suppose you want to say ’11.’ We already know that ‘1’ in Albanian is një and ’10’ is dhjetë. Now, if we use the formula mbë + dhjetë with the word një, it will become njëmbëdhjetë. This is how we say ’11’ in Albanian.

Similarly, we say:

  • ’12’ as dymbëdhjetë, which is dy + mbë + dhjete dymbëdhjetë
  • ’18’ as tetëmbëdhjetë, which is tetë + mbë + dhjetë tetëmbëdhjetë

This rule applies to all numbers up to 19.

What Are Tens In Albanian?

Now, let’s see some examples of tens in Albanian:

NumberEnglishAlbanianSound
10tendhjetë dhjetë
20twentynjëzet njëzet
30thirtytridhjetë tridhjetë
40fortydyzet dyzet
50fiftypesëdhjetë pesëdhjetë
60sixtygjashtëdhjetë gjashtëdhjetë
70seventyshtatëdhjetë shtatëdhjetë
80eightytetëdhjetë tetëdhjetë
90ninetynëntëdhjetë nëntëdhjetë

Don’t get confused by seeing the different Albanian words for ’20’ and ’40.’ Only these two are formed with the old number name zet, which isn’t used anymore.

How To Form Albanian Compound Numbers

In Albanian, compound numbers are formed by adding the coordinating conjunction ‘e‘ between the ten and the unit. For example:

  • ’22’ is njëzet e dy. Here, njëzet is ’20’, e is the conjunction, and dy is ‘2’. njëzet e dy
  • ’56’ is pesëdhjetë e gjashtë. Here, pesëdhjetë is ’50’, e is the conjunction, and gjashtë is ‘6’. pesëdhjetë e gjashtë

How To Form Hundreds In Albanian

We form ‘hundreds’ in Albanian by adding the suffix qind to the number. For example:

NumberEnglishAlbanianSound
100one hundrednjëqind njëqind
200two hundreddyqind dyqind
300three hundredtreqind treqind
400four hundredkatërqind katërqind

Follow the same rule to form the rest of the hundreds.

How To Form Hundreds And Tens In Albanian

We form hundreds and tens by using the Albanian conjunction e and the suffix qind. Here’s an example:

  • ‘101’ in Albanian is njëqind e një. njëqind e një

Here, një is ‘1’, qind is the suffix used to form hundreds, e is the conjunction used to form tens, and again një is ‘1’.

Have you understood the rule here?

We add both the suffix qind and the conjunction e in between the two numbers. Below are some more examples to practice this thoroughly:

NumberAlbanian Sound
214dyqind e katërmbëdhjetë dyqind e katërmbëdhjetë
679gjashtëqind e shtatëdhjetë e nëntë gjashtëqind e shtatëdhjetë e nëntë
782shtatëqind e tetëdhjetë e dy shtatëqind e tetëdhjetë e dy

How To Form Thousands In Albanian

We form thousands in Albanian by adding the suffix mijë. So, 1000 is një mijë, 2000 is dy mijë, etc.

Just don’t forget to add the space between the two.

Now, if the number is 5,460, there’s ‘one thousand,’ ‘one hundred,’ and ‘one ten,’ so we add all the coordinating conjunctions and suffixes that we’ve discussed above, that is, mijë, e, qind, and dhjetë.

Let’s go over them again:

  • Compound numbers are formed by adding the conjunction e
  • Hundreds are formed by adding the suffix qind
  • Hundreds and tens are formed by adding the conjunction e and the suffix qind
  • Thousands are formed by adding the suffix mijë

So, the number 5,460 in Albanian will be pesë mijë e katërqind e gjashtëdhjetë. pesë mijë e katërqind e gjashtëdhjetë

See, here, pesë is ‘5’, mijë indicates ‘1000’, e indicates a ‘and’, katër is ‘4’, qind indicates ‘100’, and gjashtëdhjetë is ’60’.

Don’t worry. With consistent practice, you can start forming Albanian numbers easily.
